Performing Arts BTEC

KS4 Curriculum Overview

At KS4 students can study BTEC Level 2 Tech Award in Performing Arts. Over two years students will complete three components:

Component 1: Exploring the Performing Arts (30%)

This unit is internally assessed and moderated

Students will develop their understanding of acting and dance by examining practitioners work and the processes used by them to create performances. They will learn about the skills and techniques of acting and dancing by watching existing repertoire, analysing it and exploring practically the processes used. A portfolio of written evidence will be submitted at the end of the component.

Component 2: Developing skills and Techniques in the Performing Arts (30%)

This unit is internally assessed and moderated

Students will develop their skills and techniques in acting and dancing by reproducing acting and dance repertoire. They will take part in practical classes developing and applying their skills and techniques, in both rehearsal and during final performances. Throughout they will also review their own progress and consider how to make improvements. A portfolio of written and practical evidence will be submitted at the end of the component.

Component 3: Performing to a Brief (40%)

This unit is externally marked

Students will be given a brief and stimulus by the exam board. They will be required to work in groups of 3-7 to create a performance of 7-15 minutes. This will be performed to a live audience.

They will be assessed on their contribution to developing ideas for the performance, their performance skills when they perform and their evaluation of how effective they were during the process and performance. A portfolio of written and practical evidence will be submitted at the end of the component.

The course is a mixture of practical and written work, to be successful students must be prepared to:

  • Attend after school rehearsals
  • Perform in shows
  • Have excellent attendance and participation
  • Work with anyone in class
  • Willing to give anything a go
  • Resilient, willing to keep refining work
  • Passionate about the Performing Arts
