University Taster for Our Year 10’s

Yesterday, a group of brilliant year ten students took a deep breath and very bravely presented a wonderful group presentation to the Head teacher, members of the school Leadership Teams and visitors from Portsmouth University. They confidently discussed the helpful mentoring they’d been lucky enough to receive for the past 10 weeks, through links the school have with Portsmouth University.

The mentoring programme focused on the skills needed when moving on from secondary education, cramming the informative sessions with interviewing techniques, fun activities and confidence boosting chats. These sessions were aimed at students who had little belief that University could be part of their future, for whatever reason, and opened up the dialogue into the very real possibility of further education for each of them, should they choose it.

The programme began with a tour of the local university, where the students got to hear more about what was involved in university life. Now the 10 weeks are complete, the students will attend a residential ‘taster’ of University learning and life, before their graduation at Portsmouth University.

We are excited to see such enthusiasm from our students and look forward to supporting them along the road to post- secondary life.
