Modern Foreign Languages

The Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) department teaches French and Spanish at KS3 and KS4. Students are taught the basic skills of studying a language in the form of listening, reading, speaking and writing each lesson. Students use these skills throughout KS3 and can transfer them if they opt for a language at GCSE. Students are encouraged to use the Internet to help them with homework, revision and research.

The MFL department aims to make languages accessible to all learners and to give students an idea of the culture of the country too, which is an important part of learning a language. Our team is a dynamic group of enthusiastic practitioners, who are passionate about teaching languages.

Mandarin Excellence Programme

We are proud to be able to offer the Mandarin Excellence Programme to our pupils. Parents will be contacted when their child is in Year 6 to offer them the chance to take part in this programme. Those pupils who have expressed an interest are offered a taster period. 30 pupils will then be selected to join the programme. If they join the programme, they will not be able to study another language as they will have 4 hours of Mandarin a week. This may include tutor times and Period 5 lessons on early finish days.

This exciting programme includes a two-week visit to China for an intensive study trip at the end of Year 8 and a residential trip to Nottingham University in Year 9.
